From physio or keeping body active, the next thing is to keep the mind active...it's very clear that all kinds of different ailments can hit one on this side of eighty-five..In the past three weeks, I have seen two friends get a kind of stroke, a mini one ...where they could not remember their friends or their words for a short time, about 30 to 40 minutes...Luckily they went right to the hospital..where they were kept for a couple of days of testing and rest..there are initials for this IAC, or whatever but it stands for a mini stroke..I'll get the exact letters and what they mean. The necessary word for all this though is FAST.. check out Facial expression, drooping mouth etc. Arms, can they be lifted ...forget what the S maybe can they smile and the last is call or tell someone,maybe..I"m not on the ball here.
In one case the woman had some Christmas cards, she saw her own writing, and the name of her friend on the envelope then couldn't remember who the friend was..no matter how hard she stared at the name...the other case the woman was talking about her car and where she was going, and then stopped short couldn't remember just what she was talking about...said "what's wrong with me."
A few weeks ago another friend couldn't lift her hand to pick up an article .this happened .all of a sudden, she is okay now, but not before finding out at the hospital that she had a blood clot that was cleared up fairly quikly...these things seem to happen out of the blue...Not exactly stories one wants to hear.
All this in the space of a month and then there are the other friends who now have succumbed or should I say were overtaken with the dread problem of dementia of some type...Everyone at this age is on to crossword puzzles..(which I'm not really keen on)..but supposed to be great for the mind..I"ve got news for these people, Mac was the greatest of crossword puzzle person, and he got Alzheimer's big time.
So now for the good news in one word...SCRABBLE, and today I played with my son and grandson, and hey I won the game... So if nothing else, I have the fun of winning and playing a game I love tomorrow will do the same. We have a scrabble group at the Tea Pot a senior group here in Lachine...I probably will not win, these people are keeners and on the top of their game..but it keeps us all mentally fit checking out words in the dictionary, learning new ones. and enlarging our vocabulary, not to mention the fun of being together
Lonliness is one of the problems of the aging population, I was jusr reading about this in the newspapers....and of course easy to say, visit friends go out and meet people, but at this side of eighty-five, not everyone is able to walk, get a taxi, or for that matter have many friends left to visit, or call on the phone.. So remember if you are reading this and not on this side of eightyfive, for heaven's sake, make friends, keep your old ones..and if you can read, your eyes are fairly good. join a book club...that's the next step we'll discuss...
