March 21/18   First day of spring,  kind of, sunny and getting there with lots of snow still around.  But for us oldies, it is a great time, looking forward to being warm and able to get walking by the lake, and maybe we'll appreciate the hot weather a more this year.  Each year after 85 get's a little tougher...I see this in the others in the building and I know what's coming, but staying positive is the name of the game. Had a couple of painting sessions, I'm no painter, but will continue to try..maybe lessons next year have to think about that for my BF, kind of crazy to call an 88 year old man my boyfriend, maybe my gentleman friend...he likes to paint, we'll see..also he likes to be useful, and he certainly is...for people our age it's important..to feel useful to do something worthwhile. I'm sure the fact that I'm involved in a group of women  The West Hill Grandmothers who do fundraising for Stephen Lewis Organization in order to help the Gran...
January 27, 2018..Saturday,   Well I've been trying to get a few positive ideas to post for the other side of eighty-five..and there are some positives, but when one lives in a residence for seniors, in this one especially, where there are many with health problems, it can be difficult...  I for one have two friends here going through such hard times, but then they are in their nineties and have reached this ripe old age so that is a plus.  BUT, do I want to live to see myself in their condition, well NO. Anyway, to be sure to keep the mind active, and to enjoy life at any age, it's great to find new and exciting things to do.  One is what I did unintentionally and that is burn two pieces of toast which caused the smoke alarm to send great horrible loud signals right through the buildings, causing the doors to lock down, as well as the elevators and have the nurses and preposees running in up to my apartment, and the fun of seeing two great big handsome firem...
Tuesday, January 16/18...My last blog on the other side of eighty-five, I tried to explain that one has to do physical activities, i.e. walking, exercise, dancing, and that is of course hoping that the physical side of life is without problems, I have a problem, arthritis, which came upon me suddenly at the end of last summer...now it is with trepidation that I exercise, but I do it...yoga  twice a week and arthritis exercise once a week, not to mention dance around the house.. all with pain which I try to control with tylenol...but along with the physical one should keep mental abilities, alert..so Mind over matter, and that is read, write, have a blog, email, and keep interested in others, through facebook, newspapers etc...only thing is on this side of eighty five I have macular degeneration which means I"m having eye problems big time...painting, is something I want to get into, but the other problem I have is concentration.  One should try to take time, do things carefu...
January 9, 2018 Tuesday...  We or I am going to start as mentioned before a reason or a way to continue to live with a healthy body (hopefully) so far it's got arthritis pretty bad...but with a healthy mind..One of the ways is scrabble, which I  play as a member of a scrabble club on Fridays...I belong to two book clubs and now my latest thoughts on this, ie my mind work - is painting...I took up painting many years ago, had a teacher and enjoyed a few sessions, but gave up after a while.. Not sure if I will go for lessons, or just copy paintings or pictures ..but I've bought some acrylic paints and water color paints..brushes..and will buy some water color paper, as my daughter Gaye, the artist, says one can use that paper for both acrylic and water color...So now I've got my partner in crime Harry, into this...we both laugh but we re both going to try.  We enjoy movies together, cooking for each other and going out for dinner about once a week, not to mention shop tog...
Thursday Jan.4/18 From physio or keeping body active, the next thing is to keep the mind active...it's very clear that all kinds of different ailments can hit one on this side of eighty-five..In the past three weeks, I have seen two friends get a kind of stroke, a mini one ...where they could not remember their friends or their words for a short time, about 30 to 40 minutes...Luckily they went right to the hospital..where they were kept for a couple of days of testing and rest..there are initials for this IAC, or whatever but it stands for a mini stroke..I'll get the exact letters and what they mean.  The necessary word for all this though is FAST.. check out Facial expression, drooping mouth etc. Arms, can they be lifted ...forget what the S maybe can they smile   and the last is call or tell someone,maybe..I"m not on the ball here.  In one case the woman had some Christmas cards, she saw her own writing, and the name of her friend on the envelope then couldn't ...
